Firefighter paramedic Mallory “Ice” James commands a crew of smokejumpers—twenty women and men who eat together, sleep together, and parachute into the face of raging forest fires together—and she has thirty days to whip the rookies into shape. Discipline and teamwork mean the difference between life and death on the line, and she’s earned her reputation as cool and controlled in the face of danger. Mallory isn’t happy when “Hotshot” Jac Russo shows up unannounced for boot camp along with a reputation for being trouble. Jac is none too pleased about her cold reception, even if the new boss is drop-dead gorgeous and hotter than the blazes they’re supposed to be dousing. Mallory and Jac may not like each other much, but lust isn’t something either can control—and they soon discover ice burns as fiercely as flame.

Firestorm edition by Radclyffe Literature Fiction eBooks

"Firestorm" is the second book in Radclyffe's First Responder series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!

Mallory "Ice" James is a firefighter paramedic working for the U.S. Forest Service. She commands a team of twenty men & women smokejumpers & trains all the new rookies that come through. Ice runs a tight crew & maintains tight control on everything in her life. Her goal is to keep her team safe. However, something she has no control over is a last minute applicant, rookie Jac "Hotshot" Russo.

Jac has the skills to get & do the job on her own merits, but her Senator father pulls some strings to get her accepted before the others before her. This starts her off on the wrong foot with Mallory, so she feels she has to prove herself to the captain. Jac has spent her life hiding from the politics of her father. She’s learned to guard herself closely & not let anyone into her life.

Neither Mallory nor Jac were ready for what happened next.

Radclyffe does an awesome job of bringing these two women to life. The emotions are high & the love scenes are hot, & the book was too short! There were parts in this book where I would have loved for the author to carry on further. There is so much more that screamed to come out in this story. I would have loved to learn more of Jac's mother, who seemed shoved into this political life just as everyone else. With this political family, it seemed Jac's father pushed the political agenda more so than her mother did.

I'd love to imagine the outcome of Hooker when that day arrives, where Jac or Mallory, or both, let him feel their fury!
Although I would have loved this story to have been longer & beefed up a little more, it was still very balanced with storyline & all the extra characters with the personal relationship between Mallory & Jac. The emotions, the passion, & the sexual tension were intense! I loved it!

Firestorm edition by Radclyffe Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

If you've read any of the 1st responders series then you know what you are in for. If you like them, then you'll like this one too.
I love Radclyffes books, but I wish I had read the reviews before buying this one.First I thought it was just the pacing that was off, but the central flaw in this work is the character development. She creates two interesting characters, places them in an interesting setting, but thir emotional development was stagnant. When we are in Mallory,s head, she feels the same things over and over. I felt like some of her thought were just lifted from earlier parts of the book. And then, 3/4s of the way through the book, she cries and her fundamental emotional issue disappears. I feel like if the characters don't move along emotionally, there is no romance. Also, unlike her first First Responder book, there was not very much action here.
I know Radclyffe can do amazing character development and exposition. Take "Turn Back Time" as an example, one of many.
Give this book a miss.
Did I mention I love women in uniform? Mallory has a month to train a group of smokejumper forest rangers. Her past with losing two good smokejumper colleagues and fiends impair her faith in herself. With fears unfounded, she deals with an antagonist, romance, boss and especially her lack of faith in herself. This story and characters are less developed than most of Radclyffe's works, but enjoyable none the less. Nothing wrong with an exceptional author writing an average story. Worth the read.
Second time I read this book. Loved it all over again. Fell in love with the setting, as if it was another character. Radclyffe always does a great job with the technical aspects of her stories and this one is not any different.
It's Radclyffe! The characters are focused and determined. A story about what firefighters go through from rigorous training to the mind set they surely must develop to professionally perform their very dangerous duties. Two very powerful women, one instructor, one mysterious recruit collide in the backdrop of danger, duty, and responsibility to the job and finally to each other. Very Hot!
Really good story line (especially in the wake of the Arizona Firefighters' tragedy.
As someone else commented, 'It's like she was there'... I was most impressed that
the book was written long before the Arizona tragedy.)

The book made me more aware and appreciative of the risks and sacrifices First
Responders willingly undertake every day.

"FIreStorm" is, to me, reminiscent of Nora Roberts' "Chasing Fire" (2012)... which i
was about to re-read, following the Arizona FireFighters' deaths, when I ran across
the comment I referred to above.
Radclyffe does action-romance best. this story of Mallory, a smokejumper, and Jac, former military veteran turned smokejumper (and the daughter of a conservative Presidential candidate), has action, a villain, romance, sex and love. It also has a healthy dose of angst and tension. I would have wanted only two addtl things 1. that there was more development btwn the tension-filled build and the moment of acknowledging love so that it seemed more plausible of a timeline and 2. that there could have been a confrontation with the "villain" because that character never makes it back into live dialogue in 2nd half of book leaving a huge oppty missed. as always though, Radclyffe is at her best in F/F action romance where, despite a high pressure high risk environment, two people destined find a way to each other for the sake of love.
